Police rescue another 16 Taiwanese job scam victims in Southeast Asia

Sixteen more Taiwanese nationals believed to have been lured by offers of high paying jobs have been rescued in Southeast Asia. Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau says the victims arrived safely back in Taiwan with help from Taiwan’s representative office in Thailand and Thai authorities.

Nine of the victims were trapped in Myanmar’s KK Park, where they were reportedly trafficked from Thailand. Another seven victims were being held captive and forced to work in Cambodia.

Taiwanese authorities say they are working with police in Thailand to strengthen their anti-trafficking efforts at home and abroad. They say Taiwanese citizens should not trust online recruitment advertisements. In addition, they warn passengers flying to Southeast Asia not to fall for such scams.

Authorities say Taiwanese residents traveling outside of Taiwan in need of emergency assistance may call the 24-hour hotline of the foreign ministry.
