Typhoon Hinnamnor is approaching Taiwan. Experts say the storm will bring rains, strong winds and high tides to most of the country.

Fishermen work together to tightly tie their boats to the shore. With Typhoon Hinnamnor rapidly approaching Taiwan, there’s no time to be careless.

Meteorologist Hsieh Pei-yun says the Central Weather Bureau could announce a typhoon warning for the seas around Taiwan on Friday. She says if the storm moves farther west or continues to grow, a land warning could also come.

Experts say if the typhoon continues on its predicted trajectory, it will begin moving north on Saturday. They say the storm is still gaining strength, and may reach a maximum radius of 280 km.

Hsieh says coastal regions and Taiwan’s outlying islands may experience strong gusts of wind. Areas in northern Taiwan and the east coast may also see waves reaching 3 meters in height.

Experts predict northern Taiwan will see heavy rains on Friday and Saturday. As to whether local governments will close offices and schools for the typhoon, authorities say though the storm’s path could still change, it looks unlikely to directly hit Taiwan. Authorities add the public should be careful when going out this weekend.
