An eight-member US House delegation arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday as part of a wider tour of the Indo-Pacific. It’s the fourth Congressional group to come to Taiwan since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip in early August.
The bipartisan delegation is led by Representative Stephanie Murphy, a member of the US House Armed Services Committee and the Democratic Party.
On Thursday the lawmakers met with President Tsai Ing-wen to discuss the United States’ commitment to Taiwan and a new free trade initiative between the two countries.
President Tsai says vaccine donations from the United States last year and its response to recent provocations by China show Washington’s “rock-solid” commitment to Taiwan.
Representative Murphy, meanwhile, says she wants to see Taiwan take part in international events, and for the United States and Taiwan to work together more often. She adds she hopes to see a branch of the world-renowned restaurant Din Tai Fung in her hometown of Orlando, Florida soon.
The delegation is set to leave Taiwan on Friday.
