Taiwan’s foreign ministry says China’s support for Russia during the invasion of Ukraine shows the threat authoritarian powers pose to world peace. That statement on Friday came a day after Russian leader Vladimir Putin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Uzbekistan — their first meeting since the Ukraine war began.

China and Russia declared a “no-limits” friendship in February. And on Thursday, President Putin backed Beijing’s claim over Taiwan as part of its territory. He says Russia “firmly adhere[s]” to Beijing’s one China principle, which assumes Taiwan and China to be part of one whole.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry is condemning those remarks. It’s accusing Russia of pandering to China to make sure Beijing keeps propping up Russia’s heavily sanctioned economy.

Taiwan says it’s ready to work with other democracies to defend the rules-based international order.
