Taiwanese Cabinet officials have dodged questions on when the country will drop quarantine and reopen its borders. Ministers met with health authorities on Monday — but they gave no timetable for the next step in Taiwan’s gradual move away from a zero-COVID policy.
Taiwan is one of the last countries in the world to require quarantine for arriving travelers.
Health authorities say there has been an uptick in reported infections with more than 99% of new cases mild or asymptomatic. But they say the number of severe cases and deaths is also on the rise.
Premier Su Tseng-chang says the government is mulling measures to reopen the border. He says authorities will still have to monitor the outbreak and take additional public health actions to make sure Taiwan can successfully cope with a spike in cases.
