President Tsai Ing-wen says countries must come together at a time when democracies and the rule-based international order are facing their greatest challenge since the Cold War. Tsai also said Taiwan’s democracy is not the only thing that China seeks to extinguish. These were Tsai’s remarks on Tuesday in a recorded video speech for the 2022 Concordia Annual Summit based in New York. The summit is an unofficial conference held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly that takes place this week.
Tsai says democracy and its values have become an integral part of the Taiwanese identity. However in recent years, Taiwan has faced threats from China on a daily basis.
The president says even though Taiwan is not a member of the UN, it continues to help countries around the world in solving many crises. She says Taiwan is proud to be able to help the Ukrainians defend their country.
The President also highlighted the importance of democracies strengthening partnerships and defending each other. She said that only by working together and supporting each other can the world resist the expanding power of authoritarian regimes.
