Small businesses need gov’t support to reach carbon goals: Greenpeace

Taiwan's small and mid-size enterprises are willing to support green energy goals, but need more support from the government. That was the word from the environmental group Greenpeace and several lawmakers on Tuesday.

Some Taiwanese small and mid-size companies with a global network say they already follow green energy guidelines from the European Union. They say they're willing to pay carbon fees and comply with Taiwan's goal for zero net carbon emissions by 2050.

But the head of Kaohsiung's Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME) Cheng Pi-ling says small businesses have limited resources to update their systems to more eco-friendly models. She says the government should subsidize new equipment and technology to help these businesses achieve carbon neutrality.

Lawmaker Wu I-ding says up to 70% of carbon emissions from small businesses come indirectly from electricity use, rather than direct carbon emissions from manufacturing. The businesses need the government's help to set up better energy alternatives.
