Over 20 Chinese planes flew near Taiwan on National Day. That was the word from Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng who was speaking at the legislature on Tuesday.
Minister Chiu says eight of the Chinese planes flew into Taiwan’s flight information region. This region refers to the area where countries coordinate civilian air traffic information and alert services for aircraft in flight. Chiu adds China has also been sending four to six ships near Taiwan’s waters on a daily basis.
Chiu says the defense ministry has been working hard to not escalate tensions at this time, but China has not ceased its increased military activity surrounding Taiwan since early August. That began after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's historic visit to Taiwan.
Minister Chiu says that he has not seen this level of prolonged Chinese military activity in his entire career.
