The King of Eswatini Mswati III is set to arrive in Taiwan on Thursday for an official state visit, his first since 2018. On Tuesday, the foreign ministry said it welcomes the king’s trip and emphasized Eswatini’s support for Taiwan.
The absolute monarchy is Taiwan’s only remaining diplomatic partner in Africa. The Foreign Ministry says the king will be hosted for state banquets by both President Tsai Ing-wen and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.
The ministry adds the king will participate in exchanges focused on development, investment, and energy during his time in Taiwan. He will also host events to attract investment to Eswatini.
The trip comes as Eswatini continues to be embroiled in pro-democracy protests. The movement started in June 2021 as the mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic underdevelopment caused many to demand political reforms.
Eswatini has supported Taiwan in international affairs since the countries established official relations in 1968. Taiwan provides the country with developmental aid, especially in agriculture, medical care, and education.
