Kenting National Park is full of natural wonders. But recently, strong winds have damaged some of the area’s treasured coral reefs.
Southern Taiwan’s Kenting is a paradise for scuba diving. But earlier this week a diver noticed a concrete block had smashed into a nearby coral reef, damaging the area’s ecology.
The diver who discovered the damage says the scene left her with a heavy heart.
The reef is on the southern tip of the Kenting peninsula. News of the coral’s damage has caused many local divers to feel deeply upset.
The concrete block was placed there by authorities, causing some to ask what happened.
Kenting National Park official Hsu Shu-kuo (許書國) says the blocks were originally placed to protect divers. But large waves caused by strong winds blew them into the reef.
Authorities say the peninsula has recently faced winds stronger than many typhoons. They say personnel are being dispatched to move the concrete blocks and prevent them from damaging the coral again.
