Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai says the city is working with Edinburgh on issues of industrial transformation, smart cities, green energy, and human rights. Chen spoke about this agenda with Edinburgh Council Leader Cammy Day via video call on Thursday.
Chen says Kaohsiung used to have a booming petrochemical and steel industries and it is now trying to promote an industrial transformation. He says TSMC, the world's leading semiconductor company, has invested in Kaohsiung and the city is also competitive in building its AI industry and 5G network.
Chen says Kaohsiung will continue to find solutions to industrial pollution and is focused on reaching its goal of net zero carbon emissions. He says he believes Kaohsiung and Edinburgh can make great progress together on green energy and smart cities.
Day says Taiwan is an important member of the international community and has offered its help throughout the pandemic and war in Ukraine. He says the world must rally together against the threat of authoritarianism.
Day adds that Edinburgh hopes to become a major smart city in Europe and looks forward to working with Taiwan in this field. He says Scotland is heavily investing in renewable energy and the country will collaborate with Taiwan to combat global warming.
