The maiden flight of Taiwan’s EVA Airways Corporation’s new Taipei-Milan route took off on Tuesday morning from Taoyuan International Airport. It’s the airline’s first new destination since Taiwan removed most border restrictions on October 13.

EVA Air Chairman Steve Lin (林寶水) says the route is a symbol of the air travel market’s post-pandemic recovery.

Milan is the fifth European city connected to Taiwan with direct flights on EVA Air. The others are Paris, Amsterdam, London and Vienna. EVA Air is also planning to launch flights to Munich next week on November 3.

Lin says he wants to attract more Italian visitors to Taiwan and also enable travelers to use Taiwan as a transit hub when traveling in Asia.

EVA Air will fly between Taoyuan and Milan twice a week. The route was originally scheduled to launch in February 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
