New US restrictions on China’s semiconductor industry will have only a limited influence on Taiwan. That was according to Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) on Thursday.

Earlier this month, US authorities announced new measures to limit China’s semiconductor industry. Those measures include limits on selling technology to Chinese firms working in advanced chips and supercomputing. They also prevent US citizens and permanent residents from working with Chinese companies involved in these sectors.

Taiwan is one of the most important centers of semiconductor production in the world, producing over half of the global chip supply. That has led some to worry about the new regulations’ effect on Taiwan’s industry. Premier Su says officials have investigated the potential impacts of the measures and have concluded that they will have only a limited impact on Taiwanese businesses.

Su says he has already dispatched Vice Premier Shen Jung-chin (沈榮津) monitor Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. He says Shen’s research with industry workers has created a new development strategy focused on solidifying the industry’s competitive advantage.
