President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) says she hopes Taiwanese businesses will seize new opportunities and demonstrate the country's prowess in the post-pandemic world. Tsai was speaking on Friday while meeting with Golden Merchant Award winners.
The awards are given to outstanding businesspeople, traditional specialty shops, and foreign businesses, among others. Tsai says this year's winners come from many areas of expertise, and the award acknowledges not only their business achievements but also their role in Taiwan's industrial development.
Taiwan opened its borders on October 13, allowing visa-free entry for eligible visitors and ending quarantine. Tsai says she hopes Taiwan's industries will take advantage of this opportunity to connect more with other countries.
The president says Taiwan's major industries include semiconductors, electronics, and manufacturing, but the awards also highlight achievements in other areas such as medical equipment and sportswear. Tsai says these diverse accomplishments demonstrate Taiwanese industries’ innovation and entrepreneurship.
The awards also recognized foreign companies in Taiwan that excelled in industries like green energy, pharmaceuticals, and communications. Tsai thanked the foreign businesses for sharing their valuable experience and establishing trade ties with Taiwan.
