A top US communications regulator has arrived in Taiwan to discuss telecommunications and cybersecurity. That is according to a press release from the US representative office in Taiwan on Wednesday.

Brendan Carr is the first US communications regulator to visit Taiwan in an official capacity. He plans on meeting with Taiwan’s communications regulators, Foreign Ministry, and other agencies. His trip comes as government representatives from democratic nations increasingly visit Taiwan.

In an interview with US media outlet Axios, Carr said he looks forward to deepening US collaboration with Taiwan and sharing views on network resiliency, cyber, and telecom issues. He added a free and democratic Taiwan is important, and the country’s chip industry is vital to US interests.

Carr has previously outlined the risks posed by Chinese telecommunications companies. He has recently urged the US government to ban the use of the Chinese-owned video app TikTok.
