Taiwan’s largest semiconductor manufacturer’s unconfirmed plans to build its most advanced plant in the country affirm Taiwan’s importance to chip supply chains. That was according to Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua (王美花) speaking at the legislature on Wednesday.
Media reports indicate that TSMC is planning to build a 1 nanometer wafer fab at Longtan Science Park in northern Taiwan, though the company has yet to confirm the reports. The chips produced there would be some of the most advanced in the world.
Minister Wang says though the company must first confirm its investment plan, the new facility is important. She says after developing its semiconductors industry for 40 years, Taiwan has the world’s most comprehensive supply chain, including over 1000 manufacturers.
Wang says apart from affirming Taiwan’s industry, the new plant could have significance for international supply chains. She says the government will provide the necessary resources and infrastructure needed for TSMC to invest in the new facility.
The report comes as many fear countries like the United States are trying to isolate Taiwan from global semiconductor supply chains due to tensions with China.
