Authorities will investigate ties between one of Taiwan’s largest media groups and Chinese investors. That came from top communications regulator Chen Yaw-shyang (陳耀祥) speaking at the legislature on Thursday.

Media reports indicate Mirror Media may have violated Taiwanese law by allowing Chinese people to own shares in the company. Reports also indicate the company may have violated an agreement with the government  not to sell shares in the company.

Chen says regulators are already investigating the allegations. But he says his agency can only perform a limited administrative inquiry. He says because of the need to ensure Chinese capital is not involved with the company, he has requested assistance from Taiwan’s financial supervisor.

Mirror Media’s application to start a new TV channel was approved in January. The application’s approval required the company to maintain its ownership structure and separate management of the channel from its flagship magazine.
