Taiwan to strengthen ties with overseas community
Minister Tung of the Overseas Community Affairs Council

The Overseas Community Affairs Council will strengthen relations with Taiwanese who have emigrated and their descendants. That’s the word from the council’s head, Minister Minister Tung Chen-yuan (童振源), on Wednesday.

Speaking at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Tung said that the council will offer scholarships, internships, employment, and other opportunities to lure diaspora Taiwanese to come to Taiwan.

Tung says Taiwan has prioritized updating and expanding its facilities to make the country more attractive to students and workers. He adds that in past years poor quality facilities prompted some in the overseas community to leave Taiwan.

Tung also says that Taiwan has launched an International Youth Goodwill Ambassador program for the Overseas Community Affairs Council. The program will actively showcase the achievements of about 18 overseas youth representatives in Taiwan.

Diaspora Taiwanese are also eligible to apply for an Overseas Compatriot Card. More than 100,000 cards have been issued to date. The program aims to boost immigration and build ties to Taiwan.
