Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry condemned a top Chinese official’s remarks on assistance offered to Taiwan in combating climate change.
Xie Zhenhua (解振華), Beijing’s envoy to the COP27 UN climate summit in Egypt, said on Tuesday that China has offered Taiwan assistance to combat climate change. He said that Beijing has assisted Taiwan in implementing climate policies “within the policy of One China.” He did not give any specific examples of support.
Speaking at a regular media briefing on Thursday, foreign ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou (歐江安) said, that the effectiveness of Taiwan’s environmental protection policies is obvious to all countries and has nothing to do with China.
She added that Taiwan’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 “far exceeds” China’s efforts to decarbonize.
On Thursday, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) denounced Xie’s comments on Twitter. He called Xie a “shameless liar” and said China has been blocking Taiwan’s participation in the UN's chief climate agreement.
