Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) says Taiwan is paying close attention to any changes in the political and economic situation surrounding Taiwan. Su was speaking on Monday with regards to the first in-person meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, ahead of the upcoming G20 Summit in Indonesia.
The two leaders have had five phone calls and online meetings since Biden took office in 2021. The latest meeting comes at a time of growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The US has voiced support for a democratic Taiwan and Xi has not renounced the use of force to take over Taiwan. China considers Taiwan a part of its territory.
White House officials say the only possible outcome of the meeting could be the resumption of small scale cooperation and communication between the two sides. Such US-China interactions have been largely disrupted by Beijing's anger over the Taiwan issue.
Meanwhile, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Monday that Biden will make it clear at the meeting that the US is not seeking a conflict with China.
