US President Joe Biden has affirmed his country's understanding of the "one China" policy and support for peace in the Taiwan Strait. Biden shared his views with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) prior to the G20 summit in Bali on Tuesday.

The US accepts the "one China" policy by recognizing Beijing as China's sole legal government. But the US only "acknowledges" Beijing's claim over Taiwan and maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan.

Biden says the US condemns China's coercive tactics that threaten Taiwan's stability, as well as any action that disrupts the Taiwan Strait's status quo. In the past year, China has banned several key imports from Taiwan and conducted many military drills around the island.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou (歐江安) says Taiwan is grateful for Biden's support and will continue to collaborate with like-minded countries to stand up against authoritarianism. Ou says Taiwan is at a crucial moment when it needs to continue strengthening its self-defense forces and maintain freedom, prosperity, and democracy in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Foreign Ministry adds that Washington has spoken up for Taiwan's security many times at international forums, which demonstrates the importance of stability in the cross-strait region.
