The National Students' Union of Taiwan says college students will be the most influential demographic in voting on a referendum to lower the voting age to 18. The student group expressed their views at a press conference held outside the Legislature on Tuesday. The referendum will be included in the upcoming local election on the 26th.

President of Yuan Ze University Student Association Liu Yao-wei (劉曜維) says lowering the voting age will be crucial in ensuring young people's voices are heard by the government.

Liu says the referendum has to pass a high threshold, meaning more than 9.65 million votes in favor of the amendment will have to be cast. Liu says it is important that all young people return to their hometowns to vote and to encourage all friends, relatives, classmates and the elderly to vote as well.
