President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has thanked Nauru for its strong support of Taiwan. Tsai was speaking on Tuesday while receiving Nauruan President Russ Joseph Kun. Kun is on a six-day state visit to Taiwan.
Tsai says Taiwan and Nauru are both maritime countries that share the universal values of democracy and freedom. She says both countries closely cooperate in the fields of health care, agriculture, livestock, clean energy, and maritime patrol.
The president thanked Nauru for supporting Taiwan's participation in international organizations. Tsai says Kun demonstrated true friendship to Taiwan by bringing his new government on the trip only a month and a half after taking office. She also thanked Kun for standing up for Taiwan at the UN General Assembly this year, affirming that Taiwan is an indispensable partner in global epidemic prevention.
In his speech, Kun thanked Taiwan for its support and assistance to Nauru in many areas. He says Nauru sees Taiwan as a close family member that works together to maintain peace and stability in the region. Kun adds that Nauru hopes to emulate Taiwan’s success and steady economic growth during the COVID epidemic.
