Founder of Taiwanese semiconductor giant TSMC Morris Chang (張忠謀) will again represent Taiwan at this year’s APEC summit. It will be his fifth time acting on behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) to attend the 2022 APEC Leaders’ Meeting.
APEC is a forum consisting of 21 member economies in the Asia Pacific region. It focuses on free trade and business facilitation. The summit will take place from November 18 through 19 in Bangkok, Thailand. This year’s meeting will be held in person for the first time in three years.
President Tsai says the Taiwanese APEC delegation will underscore Taiwan’s key role in global supply chains, especially in semiconductors. Through cooperation with regional partners, Taiwan hopes to create safe, reliable, and resilient supply chains.
Chang was able to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) at the 2018 APEC summit in Papua New Guinea. But many doubt Chang will be able to meet with Xi at this year’s summit considering the growing tensions between Taiwan and China.
