Foreign Minister: Taiwan’s bid to join CPTPP on track
Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) said that Taiwan’s bid for membership in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, known as CPTPP, is on track. He was responding to questions from the legislature’s Foreign and National Defense Committee on Monday.

Wu adds that Australia, which had indicated that membership is only open to nation-states, has since clarified its stance and welcomes Taiwan’s accession.

He was also asked if US House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy would visit Taiwan. Wu says that McCarthy is busy with his election to become House Speaker and thus doesn’t have time now to visit Taiwan. If McCarthy becomes Speaker, he would also have to see if McCarthy's schedule will permit him to visit.
