TSMC founder Morris Chang (張忠謀) says the company is planning to produce 3-nanometer chips for the second phase of its upcoming Arizona plant. The first phase will be for 5-nanometer chips. TSMC currently manufactures 3nm chips in Taiwan.
Chang was Taiwan’s envoy to the APEC summit, which ended on Saturday. He said semiconductors were a big focus of the summit and many countries envied Taiwan’s production of high end chips.
Many nations want TSMC to produce chips in their country. Chang did not mention which countries made the invitation and said TSMC couldn’t go to that many countries.
He also revealed plans for the Arizona plant to produce 3nm chips in its second phase. The plant will have a “tool-in” ceremony on December 6 to mark its first batch of production equipment installed at the plant.
The TSMC plant in Arizona is scheduled to begin production in 2024. It plans to initially produce around 20,000 chips per month using the 5nm process.
