Saint Lucia and Taiwan plan to work together to deal with issues regarding the global economy and climate change. That was the word from President Tsai Ing-wen on Tuesday when she met with St. Lucia Prime Minister Philip Pierre, whose delegation arrived in Taiwan on Monday.
This is Pierre’s first time leading a delegation to Taiwan as prime minister. Tsai says St. Lucia and Taiwan share common values in terms of democracy and freedom, and they will exchange ideas to benefit the people of both countries.
Pierre says Taiwan has helped St. Lucia throughout the pandemic and its recent flooding. He adds that global warming endangers both islands’ existence, and they must collaborate to call for the world’s major carbon emitters to take responsibility and compensate for climate disasters.
The prime minister says although Taiwan and St. Lucia are far apart, they are close friends who face world issues together. Pierre adds that St. Lucia will continue to advocate for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
Pierre and his delegation are on a five-day trip to Taiwan and will leave on Friday.
