Top leaders from five countries in Latin America and the Caribbean visited Taiwan in 2022. The Foreign Ministry said on Thursday these high-level engagements demonstrate their solid support for democratic Taiwan.
Diplomat Chen Shu-rong (陳淑容) says in 2022, leaders from diplomatic allies in the region including Guatemala and Belize visited Taiwan. She says these leaders met with top Taiwanese officials, leading to exchanges and new agreements between both sides.
Chen says the visiting leaders expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s support during the pandemic and other natural disasters. She thanks these diplomatic partners for supporting Taiwan’s participation in international forums like the U.N.
The Foreign Ministry says Taiwan will continue sharing the country's experience in upholding democracy, medicine, and education. The ministry hopes to deepen cooperation in facing challenges related to post-pandemic economic recuperation and climate change.
Many countries maintaining official diplomatic relations with Taiwan are found in the Americas. Taiwan has lost four partners in the region over the last five years.
