Foreign minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮)hosted a dinner banquet for a delegation from the US-based German Marshall Fund (GMF) on Thursday. Wu says the visit shows the continuing international support for peace and democracy in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region. The GMF focuses on issues critical to transatlantic interests in the 21st century, including the future of democracy and the rise of China.
The gathering included 10 current and former members of parliament and international relations experts from the US, Germany, the UK, France, Sweden, and Italy. Wu says Taiwan will continue to collaborate and secure more democratic allies especially in the Transatlantic region. He says democracy at present has been facing increasing threats from totalitarian regimes globally.
Wu also highlights China's rising tension on Taiwan since August following US politician Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. China sees Taiwan as part of its territory and has been making military incursions into Taiwan’s air defense zone as warnings.
