Foreign minister: TSMC is not leaving Taiwan

Foreign minister Joseph Wu says the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is not leaving Taiwan. He was answering questions at the legislature on Monday.

TSMC has said it will bring its advanced three-nanometer technology to its new plant in Arizona. But this is scheduled for its second phase. It will be producing five-nanometer chips in its first phase in 2024.

Local media and disinformation spread by China has stirred up worries that TSMC may be leaving Taiwan.

Minister Wu said that TSMC is not leaving Taiwan and he is not worried that the global changes in the semiconductor industry will affect Taiwan’s industry. Many countries are strengthening their own production of semiconductor chips, but Wu said that Taiwan’s industry is very strong and can’t be replicated by other countries.

Wu did say however that China has been spreading disinformation that TSMC is leaving Taiwan to stir up public anxiety. He said the government will deal with these false reports.
