With the holidays approaching, many are planning what places to go to with the kids. People in or visiting Kaohsiung, heads up. The Shoushan Zoo is welcoming visitors back starting December 16.

After a year-long renovation, the Shoushan Zoo in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung is finally welcoming back visitors on December 16. Earlier this week the zoo held a soft opening for children and families from nearby kindergartens.

Zoo head Chuang hsuan-chih (莊絢智) says the soft opening is a great opportunity to test out the renovated grounds and ticketing system. Visitors can make reservations online, with 2,000 tickets available per day on weekdays and 3,000 on weekends. Chuang says the zoo’s staff is looking forward to welcoming visitors back.

The renovated grounds include a new 440 meters long open air walkway and a water park. Other family-friendly designs include making animals and their living environments visible at children’s eye-level. Several parents say they appreciate these updates that help children learn to respect Mother Nature.

For all you animal lovers out there, it seems you have another must-see destination in Kaohsiung.
