International news agency CNN released a report detailing Taiwan’s dangerous road traffic conditions on Tuesday. Transportation Minister Wang Kwo-cai (王國材) responded on Wednesday that he will continue to work on Taiwan's transportation safety.
The CNN report described many of the issues making Taiwan’s roads some of the most dangerous in the developed world. Those include a lack of pedestrian walkways and inconsistent enforcement of traffic laws.
Wang says transportation safety is very important for international tourists. He says building pedestrian walkways, bike lanes, and connecting urban and country roads are all points of emphasis for authorities. That comes as countries around the world are competing to attract tourists following the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, in order to attract and retain international visitors, critics say Taiwan must improve road conditions, taking into account driver and pedestrian safety.
