Environmental organizations say the Cabinet lacks professional expertise to reach President Tsai Ing-wen’s 2050 net-zero carbon emissions goals. The organizations gathered outside the Legislature on Friday to voice their concerns.

Some organizations say the government lacks scientific expertise on climate management and the ability to influence necessary agencies. The organizations call for the government to establish a new committee that will have more influence.

Another organization says Taiwan falls behind other countries when it comes to civic participation on climate issues and environmental policies.

The organizations’ demands include implementing a carbon tax and incentivizing civic participation on climate issues. They say the government’s climate change management will garner more people’s support if the government answers their demands.
