A research institute in Nantou recently reunited with a locally famous leopard cat named "Bro Lugu." The leopard cat is the only living wild cat species native to Taiwan, and they are currently endangered.
"Bro Lugu" was previously released into the wild by the institute, so the researchers are excited to be reunited with the leopard cat. Researchers say they were worried about the cat because he lost a paw, which can make gathering food more difficult.
They were delighted the cat not only survived but even thrived in the wild. They say "Bro Lugu" grew larger and has a more muscular build. This shows he has been eating well.
The leopard cat population is threatened by habitat degradation and vehicles on the road. A record-breaking number of 47 cats were sent to the institute this year. About 27 of the leopard cats were roadkill victims. The institute says, however, it is a positive sign that people are reporting sightings of the leopard cat.
The institute says they hope the reports will help establish more wildlife crossings for animals. They hope the crossings will prevent road kills and enable the beloved cats to safely travel around Taiwan without getting disturbed by humans.
