Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Yui (俞大㵢) said on Wednesday that resuming diplomatic relations with Nicaragua is not impossible if the country elects a new leader in the future.
The economics ministry said on Wednesday that Taiwan has suspended the Free Trade Agreement with Nicaragua since the country cut ties with Taiwan last year. The ministry says the agreement mostly benefits Nicaragua so it has little impact on Taiwan’s trade overall.
Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Yui says that Nicaragua cut ties with Taiwan unilaterally by order of its current president, Daniel Ortega. He adds that if a new leader is elected, it is not impossible to resume diplomatic ties.
