Three years ago, the Nanfang'ao Bridge in Yilan County collapsed killing six and injuring 12. After a redesign, it is now set to reopen and help revive the local economy.

The Nanfang'ao Bridge in Yilan County is set to reopen on December 18th after it collapsed three years ago. The accident, which killed six migrant fishers and injured twelve, had a serious impact on local tourism.

The fishers are eagerly awaiting the reopening and are hoping the bridge will draw tourists back to the area.

A worker in charge explains that the redesigned bridge is themed after the local mackerel fish. He says the larger fish statue facing inwards represents the catch the fishers bring in, while the smaller one symbolizes the fish swimming out to the ocean.

The design of the bridge incorporates artistic lighting ensuring it stands out in both daytime and nighttime.

The Su'ao mayor says he expects the bridge to open on Sunday. He hopes it will symbolize Nanfang'ao's revival.

Visitors to Nanfang'ao have halved following the bridge collapse and due to the pandemic.

A local business owner says she thinks the bridge will draw in more visitors and curious citizens.

Another says he hopes the convenience of the bridge will help things return to normal.

Local residents hope the redesigned bridge will help revive businesses downstream.
