Whether to extend military service has been a topic of recent debate. Veterans Affairs Council Minister Feng Shih-kuan (馮世寬) said on Monday the defense ministry has plans to extend military service. The ministry has been weighing the matter with the current state of international and domestic affairs.
Feng says the current four-month training is insufficient. Feng further points out training itineraries need to also strike a balance between modern warfare tactics and regular training using weapons.
Taiwanese males over the age of 18 currently have to serve four months of mandatory military service. However after the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war, more people suggested extending the conscription period to one year. Polling has shown that a majority of Taiwanese support extending military service.
