Taiwanese authorities are investigating whether the social media platform TikTok is illegally operating a business office in the country. TikTok is a Chinese-owned company, which some countries have accused of giving China access to users' personal data.
Chinese-based social media platforms are not allowed to conduct business in Taiwan. The country has also banned government departments from using the app.
Some reports say TikTok's owner, ByteDance, has set up an office in Taichung and posted job vacancies. But ByteDance says its company has not established any "legal entities" in Taiwan.
Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council says TikTok has helped China infiltrate other countries. Authorities also say Beijing uses the social media platform to spread fake news about Taiwan.
