The Deputy Health Minister Wang Pi-sheng (王必勝) says the government has no plan to limit the number of citizens returning for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday. That came during an interview at Taiwan's legislature on Wednesday.
Wang estimates that the peak of the recent COVID-19 wave will coincide with the Lunar New Year holiday but it should have a limited impact. He says that a new COVID wave has begun and it can be expected to reach a peak between the end of January and the start of February next year. That coincides with the Lunar New Year holiday, when overseas Taiwanese usually return home.
Wang says that the scale of the recent wave seems to be small so no measures have been put in place as of yet to limit arrivals.
Many in Taiwan worry about increasing case numbers in China, where many Taiwanese reside long-term. Wang says China limits the number of flights into the country, which is likely to deter Taiwanese businessmen from returning. He adds that new virus mutations are also under control.
Wang says the government will continue to monitor the situation and the number of people returning to Taiwan.
