Taiwan's cybersecurity regulator is set to discuss new restrictions on Chinese social media platforms next Monday. That's the word from Cabinet spokesperson Lo Ping-cheng (羅秉成) on Thursday.
The Cabinet has already banned Taiwanese public servants from downloading TikTok onto their devices.
Media reports say the Cabinet might amend Taiwan's national security law to extend the restrictions to the general public. Lo says any social media platform restrictions need to be carefully assessed because it will serve as a precedent. He adds revisions would include all Chinese social media platforms.
But Lo also says officials will also consider if the platforms can regulate themselves to restrict harmful content.
This comes as US lawmakers will vote on a bill that includes a TikTok ban on all federal government devices this week.
