President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) attended a military promotion ceremony Monday in which Lt. Gen. Chen Yu-lin (陳育琳) became the first female army lieutenant general to receive her second star. There have been several female one-star major generals in the ROC Army, but Chen is the first two-star general. ROC stands for the Republic of China, the official name of Taiwan.

There had been speculation that Chen would be promoted when she was appointed Deputy Director of the Political Warfare Bureau in September. Chen has been the first female to hold a number of important positions in the Army, including Dean of the Political Warfare College. At the Ceremony, Chen acknowledged that the new position is a great responsibility and she will endeavor to use her professional skills to meet the challenge.
