Taiwan prosecutors on Tuesday charged 29 individuals for their involvement in kidnapping and detaining citizens as part of a fraud scheme.
Two of the ring leaders, one male and one female will serve life imprisonment. The remaining perpetrators are to serve sentences ranging from 20 to 30 years.
In November, the police announced they had rescued numerous victims and found three dead in Tamsui after victims were held against their will by a fraud ring.
The fraud case involved 307 victims, 61 of which were held captive after false hopes of employment opportunities. The remaining 246 victims were misled into scam investments. Victims were defrauded of over NT$396 million.
The victims held captive were bound and blindfolded and subjected to violent and abusive methods to extract their bank account information and assets.
The prosecution said that the individuals responsible committed such atrocities due to greed to amass fortunes. The prosecution added that this case has had a disturbing impact on society and affected Taiwan's image on the international stage.
