Taiwan's government thanked the Biden administration for its eighth arms sale to Taiwan. That came after the US government announced on Wednesday it would sell Taiwan anti-tank systems for US$180 million.

Presidential office spokesperson Chang Tun-han (張惇涵) says Taiwan's government thanks the United States for fulfilling its promise to keep Taiwan safe. Chang says the anti-tank systems will increase Taiwan's defense capabilities.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry says US arms sales are the foundation of regional peace and stability. It adds the potential deal will allow Taiwan to respond to China's increasing military pressure.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou (歐江安) says the arms sale shows that the US values Taiwan's national security. Ou adds Taiwan has been strengthening its military capabilities. That includes the country's recent decision to extend military conscription from four months to one year. Ou says a strong relationship between Taiwan and the United States will promote peace across the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.
