Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) approved the government's military conscription extension plan on Thursday. The conscription plan will now be reviewed by the legislature.

On Tuesday President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) announced that Taiwan would extend mandatory military service for all men from four months to one year starting in 2024.

Su says he agrees with President Tsai that better military preparedness can prevent wars.

Su says different agencies are now going to devise new recruitment procedures. He says they will work on making sure the year-long service will be more meaningful and strengthen Taiwan's national security.

Su says he is also coordinating efforts to ensure the benefits conscripts earn include a proper retirement plan. He adds he is asking the Education Ministry and universities to coordinate flexible education plans for students to pursue higher education and fulfill their military service.
