Taiwan’s representative to the US Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) says she hopes Taiwan-US relations will continue to deepen in the new year. Hsiao spoke on Sunday at the flag raising ceremony in Washington.
Hsiao says the common goals of Taiwan and the US are peace, stability and economic prosperity. She also says Taiwan and the US share the common ground of strengthening Taiwan’s democracy. Hsiao says bilateral trade negotiations between the two sides are ongoing and she hopes concrete progress is in the near future.
Taiwan’s security is also an important issue. Hsiao says she hopes Taiwan will continue to work together with like-minded countries to help maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Chinese ambassador to the US Qin Gang (秦剛) will soon return to Beijing to take over the foreign minister position. Hsiao says she and Qin did not have too much interaction during his term in the US.
Hsiao adds that the Chinese government continues to suppress Taiwan’s international viability, which remains the biggest challenge for Taiwan. She says she will continue to work hard to break through barriers between Taiwan and China.
