Candidates for Taipei's legislative by-election smile and wave as they ride through a chorus of firecrackers. Kuomintang candidate Wang Hung-wei (王鴻薇) says a total of 18 party members have joined her canvassing campaign.
Opposition Democratic Progressive Party candidate Enoch Wu (吳怡農) also took to the streets to rally support. Wu says his party acting chair and prospective party chair will join him later this week.
Wu says his election platform is focused on strengthening Taiwan's national security, competitiveness, and globalization.
Wang says she is focused on energy and taxation surplus issues. She says she will also announce plans to strengthen Taiwan's social safety net later this week.
By-election candidates will have 15 minutes to speak on their platforms at a political forum on Wednesday. This is part of their final push to sway undecided voters in the Zhongshan and northern Songshan district.
The KMT and DPP each hold three legislative seats, so this election will impact how much support Taipei's new KMT mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) will receive from legislators. The final results will be announced on Sunday.
