Ukraine’s parliament says they have received the first two of a batch of 20 high-capacity generators bought with Taiwanese government-donated funds. Taiwan’s government donated US$1 million last month to help Ukraine battle power outages due to Russian air strikes.
The Russian military continues to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure leaving millions of Ukrainians without electricity during the harsh winter months. Taiwan and Ukraine signed a memorandum of understanding stating that the funds would be used to purchase electricity generation equipment, including diesel and gasoline generators.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry says the funds could help more than 3 million Kyiv residents survive the severe winter while suffering power shortages. Taiwan is also planning another US$2 million donation to help other cities in Ukraine buy high-capacity generators to make it through the winter.
