New blood could “stabilize” Cabinet: DPP Chair

Introducing new blood into the Cabinet through a reshuffle is a positive thing and any such decision is within the president’s authority. That’s the word from acting DPP Chairperson Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) on Tuesday.

Taiwan’s ruling party suffered a stunning defeat in last November’s local elections, capturing only five out of 22 local leadership positions in the country. A December poll from the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation found that a majority of Taiwanese support changing the Cabinet. And media reports indicate a potential reshuffle may come in February.

Chen recently expressed support for Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) keeping his position. He says he has worked as a deputy to Su and knows that he is a diligent premier.

But Chen adds that injecting new blood could help Taiwan better face changes in the international situation. He says adding young people and experts to the Cabinet could help in pushing forward reforms.

Chen says any Cabinet changes are within the president’s authority, and he will respect her decision.
