Taiwan will require residents and employees of long-term care facilities to take more COVID-19 tests. This comes after data showed increased infection rates at those facilities.

On Thursday, Taiwan’s epidemic authorities announced that regular testing at long-term care facilities showed an increase in COVID-19 infections from 0.7% to 1.2%.

In response, residents and patients will be required to take a rapid test twice a week, while employees will be asked to test once weekly. Different rules will be applied to persons with disabilities, those suffering from dementia, and children.

According to current rules, which came into force at the end of November, patients and residents need to test only once a week. Employees do not currently have to test at all.

The new regulations will come into effect next Monday and last until the end of January.
