A recent survey of Japanese businesses showed that nearly 70% of those polled said that they are worried about a Taiwan contingency. The survey was conducted by the Sankei Shimbun newspaper in Japan, which received responses from 119 businesses between late-November and mid-December 2022.
Over 20% of the companies said they have measures in place to evacuate and ensure the safety of their employees living in Taiwan should a conflict break out.
However, only 10% of the companies have a business continuity plan, the term used to describe official plans for how to continue operating in an emergency. Around 45% of the companies said they are either contemplating or in the process of making their own plan.
Additionally, concerns about the War in Ukraine, US-China frictions, and Chinese COVID-19 policies, have caused companies to rethink their supply chains. About 20% of the companies surveyed said they are in the process of or have already built new supply chains in response to these international issues.
